How do e ink room booking displays work?

1/ What is e ink?

E-ink, also known as "electronic ink" or "electronic paper," is a type of display technology that is known for its low power consumption and visual similarity to ink on paper.

IKANDA uses e-ink screens to show meeting room reservations on displays (linked with Google or Office365 calendars), ideal for locations where no cabling can be provided anymore.

2/ E-ink technology

E-ink displays consist of millions of tiny capsules filled with particles in a clear liquid. These particles are pigmented, usually black and white. Depending on the electrical charge, the particles move to the top of the capsule to form an image.

3/ Energy efficiency

E-ink only consumes power when the content on the screen changes. This means that devices with e-ink displays, such as e-readers or Joan Room Booking displays,  have a long battery life because they do not consume power while reading.

An e-ink display consumes only 0.008% of the power compared to what an LCD screen uses daily!

A Joan 6 RE room booking screen (6" touch) can work for up to 3 months on a single charge (rechargeable via USB-C).

A Joan 13 room booking screen (13") can even work for up to 6 months (touch) or 12 months (non-touch) on a single charge.

A strong Wi-Fi signal near the screen benefits the battery life.

4/ E-ink applications

E-ink is widely used in e-readers such as the Amazon Kindle and Kobo, but also in digital signage, smartwatches, mobile phones, and electronic shelf labels.

Below is an example of wayfinding or signage using e-ink.

5/ Installation

The advantage of e-ink room booking displays is:

  • That they can be attached to any type of surface (glass, plasterboard, wood, stone, ...) using the included magnetic holder.
  • That no network cabling or PoE switches need to be provided, a stable Wi-Fi connection is sufficient.
  • An administrator receives an email when the battery is nearly due for charging. Just take it off the wall at night and charge it via USB-C or with a battery pack, and by the next morning, you’re ready to use it again!
